Rey Ruiz (Reinerio Ruiz) was born on June 21, 1966 in La Lisa, Havana, Cuba. Showing a passion for music from childhood, he performed on Cuban television as a child and later studied at Havana’s Conservatorio de Música. He went on to perform with the legendary Cabaret Tropicana before eventually defecting during a Dominican Republic tour and making his way to Miami — where his career as a solo artist would reach international heights.
After Sony Tropical signed him from a demo recording, Rey Ruiz released his self-titled debut album to immediate critical and commercial success, earning Billboard and Premios Lo Nuestro recognition and going platinum. He was named Salsa Singer of the Year in 1993. His next three albums — including Mi Media Mitad and Destino (1996, with songwriter Omar Estefano) — each went platinum, making him one of the only artists in the genre to achieve four consecutive platinum records. Miami critics nicknamed him the “Elvis of Salsa.” His hits include “No Me Acostumbro,” “Amiga,” “Luna Negra,” and “Mi Media Mitad.”
