About Willie Chirino
Willy Chirino was born on April 5, 1947 in Consolación del Sur, Pinar del Río, Cuba. Following the communist revolution, he came to the United States in 1960 as part of Operation Peter Pan and settled in Miami, where he would spend his life building one of the most celebrated careers in Latin music. He released his first album in 1974 and has since recorded over 20 albums, several of which achieved platinum and gold status.
A singer, songwriter, musician, and record producer, Chirino helped shape what became known as the “Miami sound” of salsa — blending the musical traditions of Cuba with American rock and jazz influences. He has composed more than 100 songs, and his music has been covered by a long list of artists including Celia Cruz, Oscar D’León, Rocío Jurado, and Ricardo Montaner. His song “Soy” has been recorded by over 60 artists, including the Gipsy Kings, whose version sold more than four million copies worldwide. His iconic “Nuestro Día” (1991) became an anthem for the Cuban diaspora. In 2006, his album Son del Alma won a Grammy Award for Best Salsa/Merengue Album, and in 2014 he received a Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
